Background: The winners of the international idea challenge Make a Difference are invited to develop and make their ideas with selected experts at the OpenLab Hamburg from 6. – 10. November 2017. According to the motto Think it! Make it! the OpenLab offers the possibility to convert ideas into physical products based on digital production means such as 3dprinters.
The idea challenge Make a Difference was initiated by the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) and the Laboratory of Production Engineering of the Helmut Schmidt University, University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg. Dr. Bashar Ibrahim and Dr.-Ing. Tobias Redlich came up with the concept of the idea challenge. They suggested to gather ideas and projects that aim at countering contemporary global and local challenges that shape today’s world – such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, endangered ecosystems, refugee crisis, gender inequalities, and insufficient medical and educational infrastructure. The general objective of the whole project is to showcase that through cooperation, working together and interdisciplinary research one is able to take first steps of overcoming the said challenges, to invent solutions and develop innovations, which are easily applicable in various contexts. From March to July 2017 people from around the world could submit their solutions for social and ecological problems.
